Natural stone is porous to varying degrees. A sealer does not coat the surface like a varnish; a good impregnating sealer soaks in and fills the microscopic pore structure so liquids cannot. How to Know When You Are Due

Forget the calendar and use the water test. Put a small puddle of water on the stone near the sink, where it works hardest, and leave it fifteen minutes. Wipe it off and look. If the stone underneath has darkened, the water got in, and it is time to reseal. If nothing changed, you are still protected.

Dense granites can go three to five years between seals. Softer stones and anything around a heavily used sink may want it annually. Quartz never needs it at all.

What Sealing Does and Does Not Do

Sealing prevents staining, which is a liquid soaking into the stone and discoloring it from within. Sealing does not prevent etching, which is acid chemically dissolving the polished surface of a calcite based stone like marble, limestone, or travertine. Those are separate problems with separate answers, and any company promising a sealer that stops etching is misinformed or misleading you.

Customers on natural stone go into a rotation and we call when the interval comes up. Most people intend to keep on top of sealing and then simply forget, which is entirely understandable, and it is the reason we made it our job to remember instead.
